How to apply

To apply for admission, complete and mail to the Barat Foundation, the attached application form along with a payment of $1,100 ($1,000 deposit plus $100 non-refundable application fee). Ask a teacher or guidance counselor to complete and return to the Barat Foundation the attached teacher recommendation form along with your school transcript. You do not need to wait for the teacher recommendation form before sending in your application, as we will hold a place for you while awaiting the school forms.

Admissions are on a rolling basis therefore we suggest you apply early. Applications are carefully reviewed and students are selected on the basis of their readiness to participate in the program. We make our best efforts to act upon each application within 1 or 2 business days of receipt of the teacher recommendation form and school transcript, and inform applicants of our admissions decision by mail. If for some reason the application is not accepted, the full deposit will be returned.

Program participants are expected to maintain exceptionally high standards of personal behavior. Since students are encouraged within the context of our programs, to take responsibility and to make their own discoveries, students whose parents require them to be under constant surveillance, or who are likely to consume alcohol, drugs, or act irresponsibly, should not apply.

How to make travel arrangements

We require that all Barat Foundation participants, whether traveling on Barat group flights or not, be in contact with our travel agent, Fred Bomze of Gil Travel, 215-568-6655 x 244. This is essential to a smooth and coordinated travel experience, and ensures that we are informed of each student’s travel schedule. Once you are accepted into the program, we will send you group flight information.

Payment Schedule

A payment of $1,100 ($1,000 deposit plus a $100 non-refundable application fee) must accompany your application. The balance is due and payable on or before April 1, 2011. Balances on applications submitted after April 1 are due and payable immediately after the applicant’s acceptance into the program.

Security Deposit

The Barat Foundation requires a $300 security deposit from each student. The deposit is to cover the costs of any damage to our accommodation facilities. Providing there is no damage to the facilities, the deposit will be returned following the student’s return to the U.S.

Travel Insurance

Should you desire to purchase travel insurance, we suggest the Travmark Camp/Summer Study Protection Plan. You will receive detailed information upon acceptance into the program.

Refund Policy

If a student applies to the Barat Foundation program and withdraws his or her application prior to April 1, 2010, the $1,000 program deposit will be refunded. Cancellations received after April 1 are not subject to a refund. All cancellations must be made in writing to the Barat Foundation.

There will be no refunds for students who voluntarily withdraw from a Barat Foundation program, nor will there be any refund for any student who is asked to leave the program for use of drugs, abuse of alcohol, or gross disobedience of the rules of the program. Dates, fees, itineraries and courses may be changed without notice should circumstances require. The Barat Foundation reserves the right to cancel any program, and to refuse to accept any person as a member of one of its programs. If the Barat Foundation cancels a program, the full program fee will be refunded.

Who Can Apply?

Any student who has completed 8th through 12th grade is eligible to apply.

Do You Have To Speak French To Participate?

The Barat Foundation accepts students at all levels of French proficiency, from true beginners to fluent speakers. Even true beginners will learn how to order at a café or restaurant, ask for directions, and generally get around in France without being self-conscious. More advanced students will have the opportunity to be immersed in French 24/7. All students, no matter what level of French language experience, will progress with their French language skills, particularly in the areas of oral comprehension and speaking.
