Barat Foundation Featured Accomplishments
- French Summer Foreign Language, Culture and Art Immersion Program founded in 1997 including 30 Newark scholarship students. All scholarship students have gone on to college.
- The Newark Arts Parade: The largest artistic collaboration in the city, including hundreds of Newark youth and dozens of schools creating giant “Animodule” sculptures to celebrate creativity and arts-in-education, now in its third year, underwritten by the Newark City Council, the Newark Public Schools, and the Newark Arts Council. Giant “Animodule” sculptures are on display at Newark Central High School, the Newark Early College High School, the YEES Alternative Education Center, the Newark Boys Chorus School, and the Greater Newark Conservancy. New “Animodules” are currently being created at Essex County Vocational High School and the Belmont Runyon School, with plans to create additional “Animodule” art works throughout the Newark Public School system.
- “Hero’s Journey” interdisciplinary visual and language arts program – for implementation into language arts core base curriculum – based on the heroic journeys of student-created “Animodules” and currently being developed into Newark’s first animated education series.
- After school and outside of school arts and academic enrichment programs including collaboration with “Against All Odds” to bring arts enrichment programs into schools both city and state-wide.
- Media Arts and Careers in Arts Programs including Photojournalism / Filmmaking / Animation / Robotics
- Job Readiness programs including Computer A+ Certification in collaboration with NJIT and Goodwill Industries
- Development of $1 Million scholarship program for underserved Newark children to attend the Wilson School, an independent school in Mountain Lakes, NJ. Program is currently in its third successful year.
